Filipe Martins (lead guitar) and James Todd (rhythm guitar) started jamming in late 2012 and begun writing songs together. Whilst Filipe was really into alternative rock and metal (Metallica, Trivium, Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying), James leaned more towards blues and hard rock (Joe Bonamassa, B.B. King, AC/DC). Filipe is also very influenced by the Portuguese folk and rock scene such as Madredeus and Resistencia, so they started blending some of these influences into a form of rock.
In 2013 they approached Alex Dias and asked him to assume the lead vocals for the band and to help with the hardest task of all – name the band! Funny enough, and after a series of ridiculous attempts, Alex mentioned: “Guys, we all love Hendrix so what about Voodoo something…?”
In 2013 Voodoo Diamond was born and aimed to create a rock sound that fused a bunch of different genres that ranged from metal, grunge, hardrock, metalcore with a twist of Iberian mysticism. The name “Voodoo” comes from the iconic song “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” by Jimi Hendrix and “Diamond”… well because it simply is the hardest rock!!
Alex is a baritone and brought with him a series of musical influences that ranged from Stone Temple Pilots to Slipknot and a promise to always help creating deep and meaningful lyrics.
In late 2013 James had to leave the band to pursue a different path and follow his professional aspirations. It was really sad to let him go but we're all still good friends! :-)
In 2015 Voodoo Diamond released their first EP entitled Blindfolded, mixed and mastered by Sikth lead singer Justil Hill and co-produced by Filipe Martins. At the time the band was still experimenting with a lot of different genres, trying to find themselves musically and hence the title Blindfolded. It comprised of 5 tracks all very different denoting the band’s pursuit for “their” sound.
In late 2015 Doug Rimington assumed bass duties. Doug is originally from New Zealand, multi-instrumentalist and can actually speak Japanese! He is influenced by Tool, Tremonti, and Killswitch Engage.
Voodoo Diamond has since launched their most recent work; a self-titled "Voodoo Diamond" fronted by the single G.i.A available on iTunes and all media outlets.
